Trichomonas vaginalis is a parasite that causes a sexually transmitted infection (STI) called trichomoniasis. It is one of the most common curable STIs worldwide. Trichomoniasis can affect both men and women, but it is more common and more symptomatic in women. Here are some key points about trichomoniasis:

  • Transmission: Trichomoniasis is spread through sexual contact, especially vaginal sex. It can also be passed from a vagina to another vagina. Condoms can help prevent the infection.
  • Symptoms: Many people with trichomoniasis do not have any symptoms, but some may experience genital itching, burning, discharge, or pain. Women may have a foul-smelling, yellow-green vaginal discharge. Men may have discharge from the penis or burning when urinating or ejaculating.
  • Diagnosis: Trichomoniasis can be diagnosed by a health care provider using a swab test, a urine test, or a DNA test. These tests can detect the parasite in the genital fluids or urine.
  • Treatment: Trichomoniasis can be treated with oral medications, such as metronidazole or tinidazole. Both partners should be treated at the same time to avoid reinfection. People should avoid alcohol and sex until the treatment is completed and the symptoms are gone.
  • Complications: If left untreated, trichomoniasis can increase the risk of getting or spreading other STIs, such as HIV. It can also cause complications in pregnancy, such as preterm birth or low birth weight.

If you suspect you have trichomoniasis or have been exposed to the infection, it's important to seek medical attention for diagnosis and appropriate treatment. It's also crucial to inform sexual partners so that they can be tested and treated if necessary. Regular screening for STIs is advisable, especially for individual with multiple sexual partners or those engaging in unprotected sex.
