Diagnosis and Treatment of Cytomegalovirus in Pregnancy

CMV infection causes hearing loss in babies.

The most common cause of newborn hearing loss is CMV infections of the mother transmitted to the baby during pregnancy.  For women at risk, such as pregnant women who work in daycare centers, testing for CMV is important early in the pregnancy.  Tests can determine if the infection is a new infection.  Antiviral treatment is available if a new infection can be determined. Amniocentesis can be offered for fetal diagnosis if there is suspicion of an active infection
